Information Your Doctor Can Provide to Assist Your Claim for SSD Benefits

In order to be approved to receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits, you must convince the Social Security Administration (SSA) that you meet the requirements. This includes not only the existence of a disease or disability but also the inability to retain employment as a result of it. One of the best ways to boost your application is to have your doctor provide the SSA with helpful details.

Your physician can help by sharing information with the SSA including the nature of your disease or disability, the severity of it, the extent of it, and the expected duration of it. It’s important that your doctor shares statements concerning how your condition impacts your day-to-day life and precludes you from performing functions necessary for gainful employment. He or she can also include the treatments that you are currently receiving and how your condition is responding to them.

Talking with Your Doctor About Your Disability Claim

If you have made the decision to apply for SSD benefits, you should share this with your treating physician. With this knowledge, he or she can help to document important information for the SSA and can provide his or her expert opinion on whether your condition could qualify you for SSD benefits together.

Should your doctor believe that you don’t have enough medical evidence to support a claim for SSD benefits, you may request that they refer you to an RFC evaluation, which can provide you with more documents pertaining to the limitations caused by your disability.

What if Your Application is Denied?

If you file for SSD benefits and you are denied, this doesn’t mean you are out of options. You may be able to appeal this decision, and your doctor may be able to help you in the process. Your doctor may be able to provide any missing information that the SSA needs in order to award you with these benefits.

It can also be very beneficial to contact a qualified disability attorney. Since 70 percent of applications are denied at the initial stage of applying, the appeals process can be quite common. That’s why it’s imperative that you provide any necessary information that was missing the first time in order to support your claim. It’s also important to note that you have a much higher chance of winning your appeal if you consult with a qualified Social Security attorney.
